Shipley, Adams Combine on Shutout as CMS Softball Salvages Split with Buena Vista

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Heather Shipley allowed five hits and no runs over six innings and Hannah Adams struck out two in the seventh as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took the nightcap of a doubleheader with Buena Vista 4-0 on Sunday at Athena Field.

Buena Vista came back from a 4-0 deficit in the opener to take a 7-5 win. Emma Suh went 3-for-3 with three RBI at the plate in the nightcap, as CMS moves to 6-3 on the year with the split, while Buena Vista moves to 3-7.

CMS got all the runs it would need in the second when Kristin LeBlanc hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Paige Zimmerman. Suh then tacked on a run with a single to center field, scoring Ari Livi. Suh added two more RBI in the fourth on a two-run single, scoring Kaili Aqui and LeBlanc, who both singled.

Shipley was able to get out of the first inning thanks to a diving catch from Aqui in left field with the bases loaded for the second out. The Athenas were also able to get the third out on an appeal play at third base, due to the runner leaving early. Shipley then helped her own cause in the fourth with a runner on first and one out by snaring a line drive and turning it into a double play.

The Beavers loaded the bases again in the sixth with two outs, but third baseman Rachel Sapirstein was able to make a running grab in foul territory for the third out to preserve the 4-0 lead. Adams was then able to end the game with two runners on the seventh with her second strikeout.

In the opening game, CMS took a 4-0 lead by the second inning on an RBI single from Sapirstein, a two-run single from Madison Gonzalez and an RBI single from Destiny Garcia. Buena Vista tied it with a four-run fifth, and the Athenas went back in front in the bottom half on a bases-loaded walk to Ellie Novogradac. However, Buena Vista scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to finish off the comeback win.

Five players were 2-for-4 in the opener for CMS, including Gonzalez, Sapirstein, Garcia, Paige Zimmerman and Abby Thompson

CMS will be back in action on Friday when it takes on Alfred for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
