CMS Softball Walks Off Two Wins to Sweep San Diego Christian

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team had two walk-off wins, the first by run rule and the second by comeback, as it took two wins over San Diego Christian 9-0 and 7-6 on Friday afternoon at Athena Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 4-0 on the season after also sweeping Westcliff on opening day last weekend.

Madison Gonzalez provided the walk-off heroics in the opener with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give CMS the 9-0 win, finishing off a victory in which it jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first. Gonzalez almost had the game-winning homer in the nightcap as well, as she hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth to break a 3-3 tie and give CMS a 5-3 lead.

That was one out from being the difference in the sweep, but San Diego Christian scored three runs on a bases-clearing double to pull ahead 6-5 in the top of the seventh.

Destiny Garcia, though, led off the seventh with a single (finishing off a 3-for-3 performance at the plate in the nightcap, and a 4-for-5 performance in the doubleheader) and advanced to second on a throwing error. Abby Thompson then singled through the right side to tie the score, and pinch runner Megan Kho stole second to put the winning run in scoring position. After Gonzalez drew a walk, CMS was able score the winning run on an error and complete the sweep.

In the opening game, Heather Shipley threw five shutout innings, allowing two hits, and Hannah Adams worked a hitless sixth to combine on the shutout. Emma Suh was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Ari Livi was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Jacqueline Solomon was 2-for-3.

CMS will be back in action for a big regional matchup with No. 12 Linfield on Sunday at 11 a.m.
