Stellar shutouts of Chapman; Athenas playing for SCIAC Championship

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team dominated the field on Friday afternoon for two shutouts over Chapman, 4-0 & 8-0 (6 inn.). Today, the Athenas are tied for first in SCIAC with a chance at a conference title as they face La Verne in the final games of the regular season.

Game 1: CMS 4, Chapman 0 – Box Score

In the first game of the day, CMS had a balanced scoring attack, putting up one run in each of the first four innings. Tara Robinson was the team's RBI leader with two as she drove in Mikayla O'Neal on two occasions. O'Neal was on base twice with one of the Athenas' eight hits and a walk.

CMS' home run leader, Carly Roleder, knocked another out of the park to lead off the third inning for her sixth on the year.

Shannon O'Neill was a menace at the plate and on the bases. She had a season high going 3-for-3, flummoxing the Chapman defense with her speed.

The Athena defense turned its sixth double play of the season on a comeback grounder to Anna Gurr in the circle who wheeled around to shortstop Robinson at second base.

Gurr limited the Panthers to just two hits, feeding the left side of the infield ground balls all game. Robinson at shortstop and O'Neal at third base made 11 assists of the 21 outs.

Game 2: CMS 8, Chapman 0 (6 inn.) – Box Score

In the second game, the Athena offense found the balance between aggressive and patient softball. The hits continued to pile up as O'Neal went 3-for-4 with a triple and Katie Savard had two hits and two RBIs. Additionally, six batters earned first base with walks.

Elaine Wang was busy at second base making catches on four high popups in the infield and Andrea Jewett remains perfect and improves to 10-0 with six strikeouts in five innings. Molly Rubidoux finished up the final defensive half for the Athenas striking out two of the four batters she faced.

The Athenas entered the bottom half of the sixth inning with a six run lead. Two walks later, Kristyne Hong smoked a pinch hit single down the left field line to score Roleder for CMS to go up 7-0. O'Neal singled to load the bases for Melanie Carlson's first at bat of the game. After an excellent at bat, Carlson flew out to right field, deep enough for Alexa Heydenberk to score for the walk-off 8-0 victory.

The Athenas (24-10, 18-8) are currently tied for first place with Whittier going into the last day of the season. CMS travels to La Verne today (Saturday, April 25) to play for the SCIAC title. Directions to ULV's facilities can be found here.
