Saturday softball split with La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the weekend's double header with La Verne, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team won the first game 8-1 and then dropped the second game 2-0. In the win, the Athenas scored in five of their six offensive innings and racked up 12 hits.

Game 1: CMS 8, La Verne 1 – Box Score

CMS got started early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Tara Robinson (CMC) earned first base on an infield single and then scored on a one-out single by freshman Carly Roleder (CMC). Sophomore Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) tallied the other RBI of the inning, scoring junior Brooklyn Robinson (SCR) who had gotten on base with a walk.

The Leos countered with a run of their own in the top of the second, Raeleen Tellez with the RBI for La Verne.

Contributions came from up and down the lineup as different Athenas recorded all five RBI in the game. Brooklyn Robinson, junior Katie Savard (CMC) and freshman Briana Halle (CMC) had the final three. Halle came into the game as the designated player and drove in Heydenberk for CMS' seventh run and Halle's first RBI of her career.

The Athenas had more opportunities for scoring as the left 14 runners on base.

In the circle, freshman starter Anna Gurr (CMC) pitched an excellent game only allowing six hits, striking out four and stranding five runners.

Junior Molly Rubidoux (CMC) closed out the game in the seventh inning, inducing two groundouts and then froze the last batter for a strikeout and the 21st out of the game.

Game 2: La Verne 2, CMS 0 – Box Score

The second game of the day was the opposite of the first in a few key ways. The Athenas' usually potent bats totaled just five hits and they were unable to push a run across the plate.

In the circle, Rubidoux continued on the roll that she started in the first game. She scattered just five hits over six innings and allowed a pair of runs for La Verne. Unfortunately Rubidoux's strong performance could not earn a win for CMS.

Amanda Chavez and Katy Kibbe each had a multi-hit game for the Leos and then Mackenzie Dutton launched a homer in the top of the seventh for ULV's second run.

Sophomore Andrea Jewett (CMC) entered in relief and finished out the game, striking out the final two batters.

On the day, Tara Robinson was 4-for-8 and is currently leading SCIAC in batting with a .561 average.

CMS (15-5, 10-4 SCIAC) faces Whittier (15-9, 9-3 SCIAC) and Occidental (6-18, 3-11 SCIAC) this upcoming weekend. The Athenas host the Poets on Friday for a double header at 2 and 4 p.m. at Athena Field and then travel to Oxy for games at 12 and 2 p.m.
