Four Athenas Named NFCA All-West Region, Most In SCIAC

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) released its 2013 All-West Region teams on Friday and four Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball players have been selected, including two first-teamers. Of the four SCIAC schools (Redlands, Whittier, CMS and Chapman) to have players selected, CMS had the highest total. The only other West Region teams to have more players selected to the All-West Region team were Linfield and Texas-Tyler with six and five, respectively.

Senior infielder Harmony Palmer and sophomore pitcher Hayley Schultz were selected first team All-West Region, while freshman infielder Katie Savard was selected to the second team and sophomore utility Marie Bradvica made the third team.

Palmer led the SCIAC in batting average (.500) as a senior and recently was named first team All-SCIAC and to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District first team. Schultz (25-4) leads the SCIAC and is second in the nation in wins and was also tops in the conference with a 1.37 ERA.

For Savard, the accolades continue to roll in after an impressive freshman campaign in which she led the team in homers and finished second on the squad in hits (46), RBI (35), batting average (.393), on-base percentage (.514) and slugging percentage (.581). Savard recently was named the SCIAC Rookie of the Year. Bradvica, a first team All-SCIAC selection, led the conference in 2013 with 46 RBI.
