Athenas Earn No. 2 Seed In Texas-Tyler Regional, Face ETBU First

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The NCAA Division III Softball Committee announced the 62-team field Monday for the Division III Softball Championship which takes place May 9-13 and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned a No. 2 seed in the Texas-Tyler Regional and face fifth-seeded East Texas Baptist University (34-10) in the opening round Friday, May 10. CMS and ETBU square off at 1:30 p.m. CST on Friday. The Athenas earned the No. 2 seed after completing the regular season as the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Champions and SCIAC automatic qualifier with a 32-11 record.

CMS is joined by 61 other teams in a field that is made up of 41 automatic qualifiers and 21 at-large selections at eight regional sites. Also in the Texas-Tyler Regional are No. 1 Texas-Tyler (41-4), No. 3 Linfield (36-6), No. 4 Redlands (34-10) and No. 6 Southwestern (TX) (30-11). Texas-Tyler and Southwestern face off in the opening round as do Linfield and Redlands. For a look at the Texas-Tyler Regional bracket, please click here.

Earlier this season CMS and ETBU faced off at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Georgia and CMS came away with a 4-3 win. The two teams have also faced off at Regionals before, most recently in 2011 when CMS beat ETBU 6-1.

For the Athenas, it is their fifth-straight trip to NCAA postseason play. In 2012, CMS went 2-2 at Regionals with wins in its first two games against Louisiana College and Texas-Tyler. Back-to-back losses to Pacific Lutheran and Texas-Tyler ended the season for CMS.
