Athenas Shut Out Oxy Twice, 4-0 For The Weekend

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team played host to the Occidental College Tigers Saturday, April 13, on Athena Field. The Athenas swept the doubleheader and the season series from the Tigers winning game one, 1-0 and game two, 8-0 in five innings. CMS is now 26-10 overall and a SCIAC record of 18-6.

Game 1: CMS 1, Occidental 0
Game one was a pitcher's duel between the Athenas' Hayley Schultz and the Tigers' Brittany Vacura. CMS was able to strike first in the bottom of the first off of Katie Savard and her ground rule double to left center field, that scored Tara Robinson, all the way from first base. That proved to be all CMS would need winning by the final of 1-0.

Vacura kept the Athenas' bats quite during her six innings on the rubber, holding CMS to just five hits. Schultz (19-3) continued to roll as she pitched seven strong innings and only allowed three hits with five strikeouts in the Athenas eighth shutout win of the season.

Savard led the way for the Athenas as she tallied three out of the five CMS hits for the game, going 3-for-3 at the plate, with a double and two singles and the lone RBI for the game.

Game 2: CMS 8, Occidental 0 (5 Innings)
After game one and its close ball game, CMS gave themselves a little breathing room early in the bottom of the first inning. The Athenas' Robinson led off the inning with a walk and then a stolen base. Shannon O'Neill laid down a bunt to try and push the runner over, but the Tigers committed an error on the play that scored Robinson while O'Neill reached base.

Harmony Palmer then drilled a base hit that scored O'Neill who was thrown out at second as she tried to advance on the throw home. After back-to-back walks and a fly out, Megan Latta hammered a triple into the gap in left center field that scored Marie Bradvica and Savard to take the early 4-0 lead.

The Athenas didn't stop their scoring barrage as they scored at least once in every inning of the shortened game with one in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth to run their lead and the final score, 8-0.

Schultz (20-3) started game two and pitched three innings of no-hit work as she struck out two. Molly Rubidoux picked up where Schultz left off throwing very hard in her two innings of relief as she gave up one hit with one strikeout.  Both pitchers combined for a one hit shutout in five innings. It is the second time over the last four games that CMS pitchers have held an opponent to one hit doing so on Friday against Pomona-Pitzer.

O'Neal went 2-for-3 with a single and a triple. Latta was 1-for-1 with a triple and 3 RBI.

CMS takes to Athena Field for a doubleheader on Friday April 19, against the University of Redlands for senior day starting at 11:00 a.m.  CMS then travels to Chapman University on Saturday April 20, to finish out regular season play.
