Bradvica Brings Home Game-Winner As CMS Takes One From Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Both teams had come-from-behind 5-4 victories as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team walked away with a doubleheader split against cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, March 2 at Athena Field. CMS won the first game of the doubleheader and is now 6-5 overall, 4-2 in SCIAC.

Game 1: CMS 5, Pomona-Pitzer 4
After trailing 3-0 after the first inning and 4-2 after the third, the Athenas ran off the last three runs of the game to get the win. Two of Pomona-Pitzer's three runs in the first inning were unearned off of CMS sophomore pitcher Hayley Schultz who got the win, her fifth of the season.

Down 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, CMS got a pair of runs on a two-run double to left center field by sophomore Shelby Long to tie the game. Long finished 2-for-2 in the game and also added a walk.

The Athenas took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Pomona-Pitzer's Fiona Riley as sophomore left fielder Marie Bradvica came up with the game-winning RBI. Senior Harmony Palmer and junior infielder Megan Latta each went 2-for-2 in the game with two runs scored.

Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 5, CMS 4
Down for much of the game, Pomona-Pitzer scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning on a fielder's choice by Susanne Boden which scored Shannon Julius. Riley then retired six of the final seven CMS batters in order to record the win. Bradvica reached on a single in the bottom of the seventh but CMS could not bring her around to tie the game.

CMS led 4-2 after a four-run bottom of the third inning. Palmer started the scoring off with a two-run single while Latta and junior third baseman Michaela Ecklund each added RBI hits as well. Pomona-Pitzer answered in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run single to right by Ashley Morello.

Freshman first baseman Katie Savard and Bradvica each had two hits for CMS.
