Athenas Win Season Opener Over Azusa Pacific

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team opened up their 2013 season with a nice home win against the Azusa Pacific Cougars on Friday, February 1 at Athena Field.

CMS was able to put a run on the board in the bottom half of the second inning, when senior Kendall Kritzik (Gilbert, AZ) grounded out, which plated senior Harmony Palmer (Oceanside) to take the early 1-0 lead.  That proved to be all the run support that sophomore pitcher Hayley Schultz (1-0) (Los Angeles) needed as she threw a complete game shutout, giving up six hits and striking out two.

Azusa Pacific's Taryn Devich (0-1) threw three innings giving up three hits, one run and walking one.

Freshman Katie Savard (Bellevue, WA) had a great start to her college career by going 3 for 4 and fellow freshman, Janelle Shiozaki (Belmont) also had a good day at the plate, going 2 for 4.

The Athenas (1-0, 0-0) take the field for two on Saturday, February 2nd at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on Athena Field against Concordia California.
