Athenas To Open Season And Conference Play

The cancellation of the Athenas 2009 season openening series at Occidental College sets up a Valentine's Day opener against cross-campus rival, Pomona-Pitzer.  Game times are 12:00 and 2:00 pm at the Pomona College field. 

The 2009 Athenas field 17 returning players and nine newcomers (seven freshmen and two transfers).  The talented squad is eager to start and believe this will be a memorable year.  After finishing second in 2008, the Athenas feel poised to bring a SCIAC championship to CMS for the first time in 10 years. 

Coach Betsy Hipple begins her fourth season at the helm with assistants Gerry Lopez (second year) and Jake Campbell (first year).  She is cautiously optimistic about the year ahead. "We have all the necessary tools: speed, power, pitching and depth.  If we continue to play with heart and passion, this group will achieve enormous success. They are committed, focused, and love to play together.  Leading the charge are six seniors who have dedicated themselves to graduating with a prestigious diploma and a SCIAC title."
