Stags Take First at Nationball Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's cross country team opened the 2017 season by venturing out to Santa Barbara to run in the 2017 Nationball Classic hosted by Westmont College. Competing against the host school, the Stags were also joined by CMS alumni who have ran for the Stags and Athenas in recent years. The Stags won the event, scoring 23 points and seeing three runners finish in the top-10.

Last season's winner Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) took the top spot again, finishing at 21:07, while freshman Stephen Steinberg (HMC) took sixth place in his CMS debut, crossing at 21:40.

Ben Iten (HMC) was the third-highest finisher at the meet, taking seventh overall and improving his event personal record at 21:49. He beat his previous time by 25 seconds. Wilson Ives (HMC) took 11th overall and set a course PR, beating his old time by 25 seconds as well at 22:13. First year Gage Hornung (CMC) finished right after Ives two seconds later, becoming the second freshman and fifth Stag to complete the race.

The Stags will run again on Saturday, September 9 at the Biola Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. at 8 a.m.
