NCAA Champs wrap up with Stags at fifth, Athenas 15th
LOUISVILLE, Kent. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's cross country team finished in fifth place for the highest result in program history while the women's team placed 15th, three places better than their pre-championships poll placement, in the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championship. Each team competed in a field of 32 programs over the flat grounds of Sawyer State Park on Saturday morning in Louisville, Kent. Ultimately, North Central (Ill.) took first place in the men's competition while John Hopkins won the title in the women's.
The fifth place finish for the men at 251 points improved upon last year's record-setting finish of seventh place at 290 points. Senior Kyle Lund (HMC) was the highest finisher for the Stags, taking fifth amongst the team competitors at 24:32.5. His teammate Joshua Sealand (HMC) was right behind him three-fourths through the race, but ended up falling in eighth at 24:39.8. The next Stag to cross the finish line didn't come until a minute later when junior Kevin Huang (HMC) took 36th at 25:11.8. Senior Jesse Joseph (HMC) crossed at 25:34.1 to take 88th and freshman Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) followed in 114th at 25:45.5. Senior Nico Banks (CMC) was tailing D'Anieri in the final stretch of the race and finished 117th at 25:46.4, just less than a second behind the freshman. Senior Garrett Ryan (CMC) crossed the line at 154th at 26:11.3.
Junior Bryn McKillop (SC) was the top finisher amongst the Athenas, taking fourth place out of the team competitors at a time of 20:53.5. Senior Caroline Willian(CMC) followed at 55th at 21:54.8 and senior Carmen Mejia (SC) clocked in 107th at 22:20.0. Following behind Mejia, sophomore Malea Martin (CMC) came in 109th at 22:22.1 and senior Roselyn Cantu (CMC) took 162nd at 22:50.7. Four seconds proved to be a significant gap between the Cantu and senior Rachel Mow (HMC) as 12 runners crossed after Cantu until Mow was able to cross the line. Mow ended up 174th at 22:54.3 and junior Laura Broderick (SC) took 185th at 23:08.8.
Amy Regan of Stevens Institute won first overall in the women's race at 20:16.4 while Ian LaMere of Wisconsin-Platteville won the men's individual race at 23:40.4. Maya Weigel of Pomona-Pitzer was the highest finisher amongst all runners from the SCIAC, taking third at 20:41.3.
The CMS men's cross country team concluded the season with their 16th SCIAC Championship and 15th NCAA Championship appearance while women won their 26th SCIAC title and earned their 19th trip to the NCAA. The Stags saw seven runners make it to the All-Region Team this season while the Athenas saw five.
