Pair of losses close out Gary Troyer Tournament for CMS
CLAREMONT, Calif. – On the second and final day of the Gary Troyer Tournament, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team dropped both of its matches, 15-10 to Johns Hopkins and 11-8 to MIT on Oct. 4 at Axelrood Pool. CMS finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and is now 4-11 on the season.
In a tight match, CMS led 7-6 at halftime. CMS led 7-5 in the second quarter after a goal by junior driver Adam Hilborn. Hopkins then scored eight-straight goals over the next quarter and a half to take a 13-8 lead in the fourth quarter with 6:37 left. CMS narrowed the score to 13-10 with back-to-back goals from junior utility Tanner Cullen and junior attacker Daniel Cogan mid-way through the fourth quarter. Johns Hopkins answered with back-to-back goals to close out the 15-10 win. Cullen had a team-high three scores.
MIT 11, CMS 8
Down 3-1 after the first quarter, CMS evened the game at 4-4 on a goal by Cullen with 6:23 left in the second quarter. MIT then stretched its lead back to three scores at 7-4 after a goal with 2:11 before halftime. CMS got within a score at 7-6 after junior attacker Alec Linz scored just before the end of the third quarter. MIT then went on a 3-0 run to put the game out of reach for CMS. Cullen led CMS with three scores.
