Chapman, slow start hand CMS first SCIAC home loss on Senior Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its final home match of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's water polo team lost 11-9 to Chapman on Senior Day at Axelrood Pool. The loss dropped CMS to 14-10 overall and 6-2 in SCIAC which puts the team in second heading into the SCIAC Men's Water Polo Championships which are Nov. 22-24 at Chapman University. With the win, Chapman improved to 8-9 overall and 5-3 in SCIAC.

Junior utility Mark Nietzel put CMS in the lead to start the game with a goal. The lead was short-lived however as Chapman evened the score at 1-1 and ran off five-straight scores to jump ahead 5-1 with 7:27 left in the second quarter. Chapman held CMS to just one goal in the first half.

Chapman led for the rest of the game building its lead to as many as 10-4 in the fourth quarter. CMS did outscore Chapman 5-1 over the last portion of the game, but could not close the gap as Chapman held on for the 11-9 win.

Nietzel led the CMS attack with three scores including two in the fourth quarter. Sophomore attacker Tanner Cullen and sophomore attacker Daniel Cogan each added two goals for CMS. Chapman had three players with two or more goals in the match. Senior Maarten Lefor and sophomore Alex Poltash also added scores for CMS.
