Stags Polo Stifles Leos

Wednesday afternoon, the CMS Men's Water Polo team took down the University of La Verne Leopards in a SCIAC matchup. Led by Vincent Schiavoni's 3 goals, the Stags held control of the game until the final whistle, ultimately bringing ULV down 12-9.

The first quarter was all Stag ball, as CMS went up 3-0 early, highlighted by a penalty shot taken by Brian Chong. However, with 7 seconds remaining in the quarter, ULV's Kyle Thorsness was able to net one of his own to put the Leopards on the board going into the first break.

By the end of the second quarter, the Stags led 6-3, with all 6 CMS starters accounting for each of the 6 goals. Defensively, the Stags held down the fort, only allowing goals from a man down play and from the center spot with 30 seconds remaining in the half.

After the intermission, ULV came out fired up scoring two consecutive goals to put themselves within one. Mark Nietzel, however, managed to rocket one past the ULV goalie to increase the lead to two. This was followed a few minutes later by a man-up shot from the outside by Maarten Lefor, which gave the Stags back their 3-goal lead going into the quarter. La Verne, however, pushed down the pool on the following possession and converted a center shot from Andrew Mackay with 34 seconds remaining in the penultimate period of play. As the clock ran down, it seemed inevitable that the teams would go into the final quarter with a 2-goal CMS lead, until McClatchy Ruskin lit one up from up top to give the Stags the comfortable 3-goal cushion they had rested on since the second quarter.

Going into the final quarter, it was CMS who took charge as the Stags scored 3 straight goals to double the ULV goal total, 12-6. This attack was led by Schiavoni's back-to-back goals. With two minutes remaining, La Verne managed to score 3 goals of their own, but this was not enough to overcome the deficit, as CMS took the win 12-9.

The Stags are now 5-1 in conference and look to close their regular season schedule with a matchup against Occidental College this Saturday at 11am at Axelrood Pool. This is the final home game for the seniors on the team. If the Stags win, they will be in a tie for first place in conference, leading up to the SCIAC tournament November 11-13 weekend at Las Flores Park.
