Colin Scanlon Sets CMS Record in 400 Hurdles

AZUSA, Calif. - Colin Scanlon broke the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field record in the 400-meter hurdles with a 52.57 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday, highlighting a busy weekend for the Stags.

Scanlon broke a record of 52.66 that had held for 20 years, since it was set by Roman Marenin in 2004. Scanlon came in 11th out of 54 hurdlers (ninth among collegiate athletes) in a meet that featured competitors from every division, as well as club teams.

The Stags were in action at four different meets over the course of the weekend, attending the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State University, and the Leopard Distance Carnival, hosted by La Verne.

In the SCIAC Multi-Dual, Kaden Cassidy won the hammer and the discus and Sarath Kakani set a new PR in the shot put at the third SCIAC Multi-Dual, hosted by Whittier on Saturday.

At Whittier, Casslist had a throw of 173 feet, seven inches (52.90 meters) in the hammer and added a first-place finish of 139'3" (42.45 meters) in the discus, with Kavin Prasanna finishing second in both. Kakani added just over three inches to his personal best with a 52'11" in the shot put, which ranks fifth in CMS history.

Evan Seigel added a win for the Stags in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.67, and Ellis DelVecchip finished first in the 400 meters in 48.19.

Oliver Pick moved into tenth place in CMS history in the 5000 meters at the La Verne Distance Carnival on Friday, finishing in 14:27.03. Jonathan Holcombe and Leo Sundstrom each had their season's best in the long jump and the pole vault, respectively, at the Beach Invitational, with Holcombe jumping 22'1.5" and Sundstrom clearning 14"11.5" in the pole vault.

Hayden Beauchemin ran the second fastest steeplechase in CMS history at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a 9:04.29, just off his program record set earlier this fall. Joshua Martinez also had a 14.78 in the 110-meter hurdles, a season's best for him as he sets his sights on joining Scanlon with hurdles record (the program mark is 14.59, which he missed by .01 last year as sophomore).

CMS will be in action at the Mt. Sac Relays next weekend before tying to defend its SCIAC title in two weeks at Pomona-Pitzer.
