Men's 4x400 Relay Has Fastest Time in NCAA Prelims with CMS Record (3:09.26)

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's 4x400 relay team of Christian Campbell, Nick Teresi, Ellis DelVecchio and Jamie Cockburn led wire-to-wire to finish with the fastest time of the 16 qualifying teams in the prelims of the NCAA Division III Championships on Thursday, setting a new program record in 3:09.26.

The relay team will move on as one of eight teams to qualify for the finals on Saturday, when Campbell will also compete in the 200 meters, after qualifying for finals by coming in fifth on Thursday with a 21.25.

The 4x400 team took 1.3 seconds off their own program record set earlier this season, and edged out Wisconsin-La Crosse by .12 to win its heat. Mt. Union also finished in 3:09.38 with the second-fastest time in prelims, while John Carroll over two seconds behind in fourth in 3:11.56.

Truman Knowles was in action in the javelin on Thursday, and had a top throw of 182-10, but didn't advance to the finals to try to repeat as All-American after setting a CMS record at last year's nationals. The 4x100 relay team also competed in prelims, but finished 13th with a 41.45 to prevent it from advancing through to Saturday's finals.

Campbell will try to reach the finals in another event on Friday when he competes in the 100 meters, while Teresi will be in action in the 400 meters. Henry Pick will run in the 5000 meters on Saturday.
