Christian Campbell Earns SCIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Year Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Christian Campbell of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team earned the SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year Award in a vote of the league's coaches, the SCIAC announced today.

In addition, CMS earned the Coaching Staff of the Year Award, with head coach Glenn Stewart, Marina Muncan, Veronica Bell Amarasekara, Lekeisha Moore, Jeff Venglass and Chris Ramirez earning the distinction after leading the Stags to their third straight league title.

Campbell earned the SCIAC honor after sweeping the 100 and 200 meter sprints, and then contributing to two relay wins (4x100, 4x400 at the SCIAC Championships). He set new CMS records in both the 100 (10.47) and the 200 (20.92) that had stood for 35 years, and added a new SCIAC record in the 200 with his sub-21 second effort, and a new SCIAC record in the 4x400 relay.

Campbell was an All-American during Indoor Track and Field season, coming in fourth place in the 200 meters with a 21.33. He currently places third nationally in the 200 with his 20.92, and 16th in the 100 with a 10.50 (his 10.47 came in February before the qualifying period).

It marks the second year in a row that the Stags have earned the Track Athlete of the Year honor, after Jamie Cockburn won it last season after sweeping the 200 and the 400 at the SCIAC Championships.

CMS will compete at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Meet and the Redlands Last Chance Meet in the next two weeks, before the NCAA Division III Championships get underway in Rochester, New York from May 25-27.
