CMS Men's Track and Field Dominates First Multi-Dual, Earns Three Wins

PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team took the first step towards defending its conference title by dominating its first league multi-dual event, defeating Redlands 112-51, Caltech 131-18 and Cal Lutheran 131-25 on Saturday at Caltech.

CMS won a total of 14 events, including sweeping every distance event, every throwing event and winning both relays.

In the sprints, Christian Campbell continued his torrid start to the season with wins in the 100 and 200, as well as contributing to two relay wins. His 100-meter dash time of 10.52 would have tied a 35-year old program record, except that he broke it two weeks ago with a 10.47.  His 21.51 in the 200 won the race by .72, and also moved him into fourth in CMS history in that event.

Campbell anchored the 4x400 relay to a time of 3:23.74, with Ellis DelVecchio, Jamie Cockburn and Nick Teresi running the first three legs. In the 4x100, he ran the second leg, with Quincey Williams starting, and Teresi and Joshua Martinez running the final two legs to a 41.31 finish.

Martinez swept both hurdles events, winning the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.07 (a margin of 1.47 seconds) and the 400-meter hurdles in 57.79, winning by almost two seconds in that one as well.

In the distance events, CMS had the top five finishers in the 5000, led by Henry Pick in 15:03.30, followed by Miles Christensen, Adam Sage, Andrew Blelloch and Noah Battaglia. Hayden Beauchemin led a 1-2-3 finish in the steeplechase by finishing in 9:41.56, just edging teammate Agustin Gomez de la Vega in second in 9:42.08, while Raja Batra came in third. Daniel Krasemann took first in the 1500 in 3:57.42, winning by just a tenth of a second over Charles Albach in 3:57.52. Kai Dettman added a win in the 800 in 1:56.03, winning by a half-second over Theodore Byrne of Redlands.

Jason Bowman had a big day in the throws, taking first in three events. He won the hammer with a 169-11, 26 feet over the second-place finisher. He also led a 1-2-3 CMS finish in the shot put with a throw of 48'11.75", edging out teammate Sarath Kakani by 3.5 inches, while Jacob Yep took third. In the discus, he had a top throw of 142-11 to win by 18 feet, eight inches, leading another 1-2-3 Stag finish with Ian Osborne second and Kakani third. Truman Knowles made it a throws sweep in the javelin with a distance of 184'11", 39 feet, three inches further than anyone else.

CMS will be back in action when it competes at the Occidental Distance and Sprint Carnival next weekend.
