CMS Men's Track and Field Picked First in SCIAC Preseason Poll

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team was picked to finish first in the SCIAC in a preseason poll of the league's coaches, the conference office announced today.

The Stags have won the last two SCIAC titles, winning at home in 2019 and then repeating in 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, winning last year's title by over 100 points.

CMS earned eight of the nine first-place votes and finished with 77 points, ahead of second-place Pomona-Pitzer with 69 points. Redlands, which received the other first-place vote, was third with 64 points, followed by Occidental, Whittier, La Verne, Chapman, Cal Lutheran and Caltech.

The Stags return All-Americans Truman Knowles (javelin) and Henry Pick (5000 meters) and SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year Jamie Cockburn (the 200-meter and 400-meter SCIAC Champion) to lead the way in 2023. Sarath Kakani is also back after winning the SCIAC shot put title, while Cockburn and Nick Teresi were part of the first-place 4x400 relay team.

CMS also has several other All-SCIAC returners including Jason Bowman, who was second in the hammer throw and third in the javelin. Joshua Martinez was second in the 110-meter hurdles last year and Christian Campbell was third in the 200 meters.

The Stags will open their outdoor competition next weekend, when they compete at the Pomona-Pitzer All-Comers Meet, before hosting the Rossi Relays on Feb. 25. Several Stags are competing at indoor events this weekend trying to qualify for next month's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships
