CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team will serve as the host of the 2019 SCIAC Championships, which will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the Burns Track Complex.

The Stags were 7-1 in dual competition against SCIAC teams in the spring, with the only defeat coming to Redlands. The Bulldogs come into the SCIAC Championships ranked No. 16 nationally with Pomona-Pitzer at No. 2, making this year's competition especially intense.

The throws are where the Stags are best positioned to bring home individual championships, with the top-seeded competitor in three of the four events (and the second seed in the other). CMS enters the SCIAC Championships ranked 1-2-3 in the javelin this season, with junior Maxwell Knowles first at 185 feet, sophomore Jordan Venglass second at 182 feet, eight inches, and sophomore Connor Schulz third at 172 feet.

Junior Reese Peterson, meanwhile, is ranked in the top three in the other three throwing events, including first in the hammer, with a top mark of 161 feet, two inches. He is also second in the shot put at 46'6.25" and third in the discus at 137'4", behind his top-seeded teammate, sophomore Matthew Sill (140'5").

On the track, CMS has plenty of depth in the distance events to try to pick up significant points in the team standings. In the 1500 meters, Wilson Ives enters ranked fifth in SCIAC with a 3:54.05 set last week at the Bryan Clay Invitational, which moved him into tenth in program history, while senior Ben Iten has the seventh-best time in the league.

Freshman Miles Christensen is ranked second in the 5000 meters after running a 14:24.67 at the Oxy Distance Carnival and could potentially have a close battle with top-seeded senior All-American Andy Reischling of Pomona-Pitzer for the league championship. Sophomore Stevie Steinberg is fourth in the 5000, Ives is ninth and freshman Kyril Van Schendel is 12th seed. In the steeplechase, sophomore Evan Hassman ranks fourth with a 9:25.46 last week at the Bryan Clay, with sophomore Will Kimball sixth and freshman Adam Wilkinson eighth.

In the sprints, senior Corbin Bethurem will be in the mix for individual championships in the 100 and 200 meters, coming with the fifth-fastest time in the 100 at 10.85, just .13 behind the top seed (Tyler Webb of Occidental at 10.72 seconds) and sixth in the 200 at 22.07. Senior Matthew Guillory will also be in the hunt for the finals, coming into the SCIAC Championships ranked 10th (11.13), while freshman Jamie Cockburn has similar aspirations in the 200, where he ranks eighth (22.22). Cockburn will also look to challenge in the 400 meters, where he is No. 3 in the SCIAC with a top time of 49.35 set at the third SCIAC Multi-Dual on April 13.

The 4x100 relay team will look to challenge for the league title after running a 41.65 at the final SCIAC multi-dual, seeding the Stags second behind Redlands at 41.51. Guillory, sophomore Carter Henderson, Cockburn and Bethurem were responsible for the 41.65 which moved them into fifth in CMS history in the event. The 4x400 team of sophomore Alex McDonald, sophomore Daniel Addison, freshman Keizo Morgan and Cockburn, meanwhile, is ranked fourth, but is just .7 behind top-seeded Whittier, giving them title aspirations as well.

McDonald is also a strong contender for the league title in the 400-meter hurdles, coming in a very close second after the regular season with a top time of 54.42 (just .04 behind top-seeded Evan Cox of Cal Lutheran). In the 800, Sealand is ranked seventh with a 1:55.69, with freshman Keizo Morgan (1:56.24) and junior Max Denning (1:56.88) also in the mix to reach the finals.

Junior Walker Quinn has the second-best mark in the SCIAC in the pole vault after clearing a personal-best 15'5.75" last week at the Beach Invitational, with freshman Garegin Soghomonyan (14'3.25") and junior Alex Cha (13'3.5) seeded sixth and ninth, respectively. Senior Eric Myers is ranked fourth in the high jump with a top clearance of 6'0.75", with sophomore Ross Rainaldi right behind him in fifth with a jump of an even six feet. Junior Tse Yang Lim is ranked third in the triple jump (44'0.75") and eighth in the long jump (21'1.5").
