Advik Mareedu Earns SCIAC Athlete of the Year, Four Stags Earn All-SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd-Scripps first-year Advik Mareedu won both the SCIAC Athlete of the Year and the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year awards, while Matthew Robinson (first team), Ian Freer (second team) and Christian Settles (second team, SCIAC Character Award) earned All-SCIAC accolades, the league office announced today.

Mareedu was the national champion in the fall at the ITA Cup, after winning the ITA West Regional over Caleb Wilkins of Chapman. He enters postseason play with a 25-4 record in singles, including 6-0 in the SCIAC, and has won his last nine singles matches, all in straight sets. Mareedu becomes the second Stag to win Athlete of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards in the same season, following Nikolai Parodi (CMC '2020) who did it in his first season in 2017.

Robinson went 6-0 in SCIAC play this season, mostly playing at No. 2 singles, and has an overall record of 13-7 in singles and 21-7 in doubles, earning All-America honors in the fall after winning the ITA West Regionals. Out of conference he provided the clinching point in a 5-4 win over No. 1 ranked Chicago at the ITA Indoor Championship.

Freer had a 6-1 record in singles during SCIAC at the No. 3 position, and carries a 13-6 singles record and an 11-9 doubles record into the SCIAC Tournament. He was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Week after a week in which he picked up two wins over Gustavus Adolphus and one over Cal Lutheran.

Settles earned All-America honors in doubles in the fall with Robinson after winning the ITA West Championship, and carries a 10-10 record in singles and a 17-11 record in doubles into the postseason. Settles was also the recipient of the SCIAC Character Award, due to his dedication to leading all community service team efforts including two trips to feed the homeless through "Pomona Promise". CMS' Robert Liu received the inaugural SCIAC Character Award in 2022.

CMS opens SCIAC Tournament play on Friday when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer at 6 p.m., six days after edging the Sagehens 5-4 to complete its 17th straight undefeated regular season in conference.
