Daniel Blackman Earns SCIAC Athlete of the Week for CMS Men's Tennis

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Daniel Blackman of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned the SCIAC Athlete of the Week for events through Sunday, April 16, the league office announced today.

Blackman was 3-0 in singles, including the clincher in a third-set tiebreaker in a 4-3 win over Azusa Pacific, which marked the first time that the Stags have ever beaten the Cougars (0-21 all-time coming in). Blackman had to hold serve down 5-4 and 6-5 to get it to a tiebreaker, and then won the tiebreaker 7-4.

In addition to his APU clincher, Blackman also added 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4 wins over Caltech and Chapman, respectively, to help CMS to a pair of league wins, stretching their SCIAC regular season win streak to 144, breaking Redlands league record of 143 regular season wins in a row from 1963-76.

CMS has now had four different players earn the SCIAC Athlete of the Week honor, as Blackman joins Ian Freer, Advik Mareedu and Matthew Robinson as Stags who have captured the distinction this spring.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday for a Sixth Street Rivalry match at Pomona-Pitzer at 5:30 p.m.
