CMS Men's Tennis Takes Two from Gustavus Adolphus in Top-Ten Matchups

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team played Gustavus Adolphus twice on Friday, winning a 4-3 decision in the morning (with doubles counting as one point) and then adding a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

Third-ranked CMS moves to 12-4 on the year with the two wins, while No. 10 Gustavus Adolphus falls to 18-9 with the defeats. The two teams made up a rainout from last month, in addition to the scheduled match on Friday.

The opener was close, as Christian Settles was able to get the key clinch by taking the final three games for a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Gustavus Adolphus earned the doubles point by taking two out of three, with Ian Freer and Matthew Robinson earning a 6-4 win at No. 2. Advik Mareedu knotted the score with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and then then Freer (No. 3) and Warren Pham (No. 5) had 7-6(4), 6-1 wins to make it 3-1.

Settles trailed 4-3 in the second as Josh Christensen tried to split sets and force a third, but Settles was able to pull out the final three games to secure the clinch, making Gustavus Adolphus' subsequent wins at No. 6 and No. 2 moot for the team score.

The second match saw CMS win two out of three doubles points, as Mareedu and Pham won 8-4 at No. 3, and Freer and Daniel Blackman won 8-5 at No. 2. Gustavus took the first singles point to tie the match 2-2, but the Stags won remaining five singles matches, coming back from a set down at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.

Mareedu notched his 20th victory of the year at No. 1 (6-1, 6-3), and Freer followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles to make it 4-2. Pham then gave CMS the clinch with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 4. Settles added his second win of the day in drmatic fashion, saving two match points on his serve at 4-5 in the second set before pulling out two tie-breaks. Blackman found redemption in his second three-setter of the day, coming back from a 3-1 service break down in the third to win the last five games for victory at No. 6.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow for a 10 a.m. match against Cal Lutheran.
