Parodi Leads Four Stags on All-SCIAC First Team
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – On Friday morning, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced their end of season awards for the 2018 men's tennis season. Among the honorees were four Stags on the First Team, including the SCIAC Athlete of the Year, Nikolai Parodi (CMC). In addition to the individual accolades, CMS was named the SCIAC Sportsmanship team. The first such honor in program history.
Pardoi's SCIAC Athlete of the Year and First Team All-SCIAC honors are the second in as many seasons for the sophomore. Joining Parodi on the First Team are Jack Katzman (CMC), Oscar Burney (CMC), and Julian Gordy (CMC). With four members named First Team All-SCIAC, CMS comprises nearly half of the First Team's nine members.
Playing in both the top singles and doubles spot, Parodi has put together a tremendous sophomore campaign. He holds an 18-3 in singles play and has partnered with Julian Gordy for a mark of 18-5 on the No. 1 doubles court during the Stags' dual matches. In addition to his strong play in dual matches, Parodi claimed his second-straight Ojai Valley Tournament title in singles and doubles play last weekend.
While Parodi has anchored the top spot for the Stags this season, CMS has not lacked depth in their line-up. The top four players in the CMS line-up earned First Team accolades with freshman Jack Katzman earning the nod from the No. 2 singles spot. Katzman has played the vast majority of his matches at No. 2, but does hold a 2-0 record at the top singles spot. In his debut season in Claremont, the freshman holds a 17-4 overall record in singles play and has partnered with Oscar Burney in doubles for a 21-3 mark.
Speaking of Oscar Burney, the sophomore earned All-SCIAC honors for his at the number three spot in the Stags' singles line-up. After starting the season 2-3, Burney finished out the regular season with a 14-2 record in CMS' dual matches to end the season with an overall record of 16-5. On the year, Burney has claimed 12 straight-set sweeps in singles play and, as mentioned, has partnered with Katzman for all of his doubles matches with the duo holding a 21-3 record.
The final Stag to earn All-SCIAC accolades for the 2018 season was junior captain Julian Gordy. Throughout the season, Gordy has shown his leadership on the court with tight wins against tough opponents. In singles play, Gordy has been a consistent threat at No. 4 singles with a 14-3 record. On the season he has play in six, three-set matches and holds a 5-1 record in matches that have gone the distance. In doubles play, he has paired with Parodi for an 18-5 record in the top doubles spot.
On Friday afternoon, the Stags topped the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen 5-0 to advance to Saturday's SCIAC Tournament Championship at 1:00 p.m. against Pomona-Pitzer. The Stags and Sagehens will square-off at the Biszantz Family Tennis center with an Automatic Qualifier (AQ) for the NCAA Tournament on the line.
