Doubles sweeps fuel CMS in wins over Whittier and Point Loma
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis teeam used a pair of doubles sweeps to overwhelm both No. 35 Whittier and Division II Point Loma by scores of 9-0 and 8-1 on Saturday. Senior captain Daniel Morkovine (CMC) led the Stags with two singles and two doubles wins.
CMS delivered their most impressive doubles play of the season, using four different combinations to record the six pro-set wins. Morkovine and sophomore partner Julian Gordy (CMC) were dominant in 8-3 and 8-2 wins. The Stags' closest match of the day was at No. 3 against Point Loma, where sophomore Alfred Simental (CMC) and freshman Jake Williams (HMC) fought off a match point at 6-7, but won the last three games for a 9-7 win. CMS entered the weekend 27-27 in doubles matches, and is now 35-28. The Stags are 108-22 in singles matches on the season.
Morkovine's two straight set wins on Saturday gives him a team leading 19 for the season, equaling his win total for all of 2016. Seniors Max Macey (CMC) and Alex Brenner (CMC) also contributed two wins each in singles. Brenner got the clinching win against Whittier, while Macey clinched in the afternoon against Point Loma. Sophomore Avi Vemuri (CMC) was also a winner at No. 6 against PLNU, his fifth win this spring without the loss of a set.
CMS (19-2, 3-0) continues SCIAC play next weekend as they travel to Cal Lutheran (5-14, 1-4) on Friday, April 14 at 3:00 PM, then square off against Occidental (4-10, 0-5) and Chapman (1-12, 0-3) on Saturday, April 15 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
