Hull continues tradition of Stags participating in Small College Championships

SUMTER, S.C. – Over the course of the last two weeks, sophomore Glenn Hull of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team has gone from relative unknown on the national level prior to the ITA Small College Regionals, to the No. 4 seed heading into the Small College National Championships, which begin on Thursday, Oct. 9 in Sumter, S.C.

Thursday is when Hull opens up with his first match, at 10:30 a.m. (EST) against Steven Chen of Wesleyan. Depending on the opening match results, Hull would then play on Friday against either Alex Ruderman of Emory or Nicholas Chua of the University of Chicago. Ruderman is the tournament's top seed. Results from the weekend can be found on the ITA Small College Championships webpage.

Hull raised some eyebrows by winning the ITA Regionals at the end of September, despite being unseeded. On his way to the regional title, Hull defeated third-seeded Moises Cardenas of Cal Lutheran in the quarters, teammate and top seed Warren Wood in the semis and teammate and second seed Nik Marino in the championship match. Hull became the fourth-consecutive CMS singles player to win the West Regional, following Alex Lane in 2011, Neel Kotrappa in 2012 and Skyler Butts in 2013. A Stag singles player has won the regional event seven of nine times since 2006.

The last time CMS had a singles player win the Small College National Championships was in 2006 when Michael Starr won. Last season, Skyler Butts was a finalist for CMS.

The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions.

Should Hull be crowned as the singles champion at the Division III level, he would then compete to become the overall "Super Bowl" champion. The "Super Bowl" pits the winner of each level of the Small College Championships (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges) against each other.

The "Super Bowl" champions earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with the opportunity to win the culminating event held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
