Doubles mastery

#1 CMS Stags Tennis used dominant doubles play to earn 9-0 and 8-1 wins over Occidental and Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Stags got their fourteenth and fifteenth doubles sweeps of the year, and move to 22-1 overall while completing regular season SCIAC play with a 7-0 record. CMS will enter the SCIAC post season tournament as the top seed on May 2-3 at Cal Lutheran.

Nik Marino (Jr. - San Diego, CA) was the only Stag to play singles in both dual matches, earning clinching straight set wins at the #2 position. Against Occidental, Marino helped anchor the top half of a Stags singles lineup that yielded only four games. Warren Wood (Jr. - Del Mar, CA) was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over the west region's twelfth ranked singles player Josh Dancu at #1, while freshman Daniel Morkovine (San Carlos, CA) notched his seventeenth singles win of the year at the #3 spot. Sophomore Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) put CMS up 7-0 at #4, before Rohan Shankar (Fr. - San Jose, CA) and Neel Kotrappa (Sr. - La Verne, CA) completed the scoring for the Stags at #6 and #5 respectively.

Keeping the same doubles lineup and five new singles players, CMS dictated early against Division II Point Loma Nazarene and never let up. Freshman Max Macey (Wilton, CT) was first off among the Stags' singles players, winning the last nine games at #6 for his tenth win of the year. Similarly, Glenn Hull (Fr. - Brookings, OR) trailed 3-1 in the first set at #5, before rattling off eleven straight games for a 6-3, 6-0 win to put CMS up 6-0. Sophomore Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) was challenged at #3, but held on in two tough sets for his twenty-third singles win of the year, while senior captain Zhenya Pereverzin (Clackamas, OR) won his sixth straight dual match, this time at the #4 position.

CMS resumes dual match action on Monday, April 21 at 5:00 PM with a non-conference matchup against NAIA opponent Concordia University.
