Stags Defeat Caltech, Fall to Hawaii Pacific in Home Openers
CMS Men's Tennis opened its 2010 dual match campaign with a Parents Weekend double header at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday. The Stags defeated Caltech 9-0 before falling 6-3 to fifth ranked Division II opponent Hawaii Pacific.
Twelve Stags saw action against Caltech, with seniors Thomas Keiffer (La Jolla, CA) and Myles Crandall (Tucson, AZ) leading the singles attack at the top two positions. Six new team members - Matt Ellis (Mercer, Island, WA), Ernie Hayhurst (Amarillo, TX), Trevor Apple (Hillsboro, OR), Alex Johnson (Thousand Oaks, CA), Sam Wong (Palo Alto, CA) and Ethan Bond (Beverly Hills, CA) - made their dual match debuts for CMS.
Against Hawaii Pacific, the Stags fought back from a 4-0 deficit before dropping a tightly contested 6-3 final. CMS was impressive at the top two singles positions, with #1 Robbie Erani (So. - New York, NY) and senior captain Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) at #2 winning comfortably in straight sets. Erani rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the first set to win eleven straight games to get the win over D2's #3 ranked singles player. Senior Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA), who celebrated his 22nd birthday, earned the Stags' third and final point with a singles win at the #6 position.
With the split, CMS begins the season at 1-1 overall, and 1-0 in conference. Next up for the Stags is a conference match at Whittier on Friday, February 19, followed by a home double header against Westmont and Chapman on Saturday, February 20.
