Stags Fall to #3 Wash U

CMS Stags Tennis concluded its three match road trip in Texas with a 7-2 loss to Washington University (St. Louis) on Sunday. The Stags completed a week where they played five top ten teams in six days. CMS began the week in Claremont, with wins over #5 Middlebury and #1 Gustavus Adolphus, and then traveled to San Antonio and Austin, where they fell to #8 Trinity University, #9 Williams, and #3 Wash U.

The rain delayed match against Wash U. on Sunday began with the singles, and the Stags were able to win at only the number four position. Freshman Ronald Wu (Los Altos, CA [pictured]) continued to play at a consistently high level in earning his fourth singles win in five matches during the week. In each of his matches, Wu split the first two sets. Two of his victories came in three sets, while the other two came in decisive third set match tie-breaks.

Against Wash U. in the doubles, the Stags were victorious at #1, and held two service break leads at the #2 and #3 positions. CMS' number two and three doubles both served for the match at 7-6, and the #3 team of Wu and Mike Starr (So. - San Ramon, CA) had two match points. However, Wash U. battled back to take both matches and secure the 7-2 win over the Stags.

CMS returns to their home courts and SCIAC action this weekend. On Friday, CMS hosts La Verne at 12 Noon and then Concordia at 4 PM. On Saturday, the Stags travel to Occidental and then host Chapman in the afternoon. CMS is now 14-7 on the season.
