Stags Defeat #8 UMW and Wabash

CMS Stags Tennis extended their winning streak to seven matches with decisive 7-2 and 8-1 wins over #8 University of Mary Washington and Wabash College in a Wednesday double-header. Sophomore Mike Starr (San Ramon, CA - pictured) was a straight set winner at #3 to get the Stags their first singles win of the afternoon.

Against Mary Washington, the Stags got out to a 2-0 lead with 8-3 and 8-4 wins at #1 and #2 doubles. Juniors Gui Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) and Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) won their fifth straight at #1, while Ben Hough (Sr. - Spokane, WA) and Eric MacColl (So - Greenbrae, CA) won their seventh straight at the #2 position. After dropping 3rd doubles and holding a 2-1 advantage going into singles, the Stags went on to win five of six first sets, including four tie-breaks. Wang battled back from 6-5 down in the first with his opponent serving for the set, to prevail 7-6(4) and then 6-1 in the second. Similarly, Drew Sabater (Jr. - Claremont, CA) saved two set points on his serve before prevailing 7-6(4) in the first, and then 6-3 in the second. MacColl at #4 singles was the only Stag to win comfortably, earning a 6-4, 6-0 win.

In the evening match against Wabash College, Mikey Lim (So. - Honolulu, HI) was the only Stag to see double duty. Fresh from a tough straight set win at #1 singles over UMW's John James, Lim came back to partner Ronald Wu (Fr. - Los Altos, CA) at #1 doubles and get an 8-1 win. Wu, returning to action for the first time since February 2nd, was dominant in singles action as well, earning a 6-0, 6-2 win at the #3 position. Wu was one of four Stags to get decisive straight set wins in the Wabash match. However, at #1 and #2 singles, Texans Russell Brockett (Fr. - Austin, TX) and Ben Wiener (Jr. - Houston, TX) needed third set match tie-breaks to get their victories. Brockett at #1 held a match point returning serve in the second set and was unable to convert, only to win a close 10-8 match tie-break for the victory. Wiener, fought back from a set and a break down to win to consecutive tie-breaks and earn a hard fought match at #2.

CMS moves to 9-3 on the season. The Stags return to action when they co-host the Stag-Hen Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. The field features one regionally ranked team (UT- Tyler) and seven nationally ranked teams: CMS #5, Trinity (TX) #7, Bowdoin #11, Kenyon #12, Whitman #16, College of New Jersey #25, and Pomona-Pitzer #30.
