Men’s Tennis Still Perfect in SCIAC

CMS Stags Tennis earned a key SCIAC road victory over #10 Redlands on Saturday, extending their conference winning streak to 28 matches. The Stags were 5-4 winners over the Bulldogs, led by junior Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA [pictured]) and sophomore Mike Starr (San Ramon, CA), who both had two wins on the day.

Wang and doubles partner Guillaume Schils (Jr. - Shaker Heights, OH) got an important win at #1 doubles with the match tied at 1-1, to put CMS up 2-1 going into the singles. Schils and Wang broke back to level the match at 6-all, and then broke again at 7-8 to get the victory.

With a 2-1 advantage to start the singles, CMS got two convincing straight set victories from Wang at #1 and Mikey Lim (So. - Honolulu, HI) at #3. Up 4-1, the Stags lost two tough matches at #2 and #5 singles, setting the stage for either Starr or junior Drew Sabater (Claremont, CA) to clinch the match. Both players were in three set matches, with Sabater having won the first set and Starr having lost the first set. Starr was able to capitalize on the momentum he used to win the second set and earned two early breaks of serve in the decisive third set. Starr's fourth break of serve in the third set was the clincher for CMS, giving them a 5-3 match lead.

CMS is now 19-7 overall and 7-0 in SCIAC. The Stags face the nation's top ranked Division III team and defending national champions, UC Santa Cruz, on Sunday at 10:30 AM.
