Stags Defeat Pomona 8-1 to Begin SCIAC Play

CMS Stags Tennis defeated Pomona-Pitzer 8-1 on Friday to open their campaign for a third consecutive outright SCIAC title. The win was the Stags 22nd straight in conference play.

Against Pomona, the Stags got out to a 2-0 lead in the doubles with wins at #2 and #3 doubles. Senior Captain Ben Hough (Spokane, WA / pictured right) got the first of two wins on the day, partnering sophomore Eric MacColl to get an 8-5 win at #2. Sophomore Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) and junior Ben Wiener were 8-4 winners at #3 doubles.

After dropping #1 doubles and holding a 2-1 advantage in matches, the Stags came out firing in singles and did not lose more than two games in any first set at positions #1 through #6. MacColl was the first to earn a victory at #4, closely followed by Wiener at #5 and Lawrence Wang (JR - Orange, CA) at #2 singles.

The Stags are 1-0 in conference play and 1-2 overall. Next up are two NAIA opponents - Biola and Azusa Pacific University at 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM Saturday.
