Stags Drop Openers to Point Loma and Cal Baptist
CMS Stags Tennis opened its 2008 campaign with losses to two nationally ranked NAIA teams on Saturday. The Stags lost 8-1 to Point Loma Nazarene in the first match of the double header, then fell 7-2 to Cal Baptist in the late afternoon match.
Against PLNU, the Stags lone point came at #3 doubles, where Texan natives Ryan Berber (So - Austin, TX) and Russell Chidester (Jr - Austin, TX - pictured right) won 8-6. In the singles, CMS did not win a set, but were competitive at #2 and #5, where Ben Hough (Sr - Spokane, WA) and Guillaume Schils (Jr - Shaker Heights, OH) lost in close straight set matches.

The afternoon match against Cal Baptist proved to be much more competitive, despite the Stags falling behind 3-0 after the doubles. Freshman Russell Brockett (Austin, TX) got CMS it's first point with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 singles. Junior Drew Sabater (Claremont, CA) earned the Stags other point with a come from behind win at #4 singles. Junior Ben Wiener (Houston, TX) played well at #2 singles but lost a tough split set decision in a match tie-break. Similarly, senior Kirthi Narasimhan (Sugar Land, TX) lost in a third set match tie-break after winning the second set.
