SCIAC Champions Times Three
CMS Men's Tennis earned its third straight outright SCIAC title on Saturday, with an 8-1 win over Redlands in the championship match. The Stags extended their conference unbeaten streak to 31 dual matches with the title and earn an automatic qualification spot in the NCAA tournament.
The Stags made their way to the championship match by defeating Caltech and Pomona-Pitzer by 7-0 and 9-0 scores on Friday. Just before their opening matches, CMS found out that they would be without starters Ronald Wu (Fr. - Los Altos, CA) and Mikey Lim (So. - Honolulu, HI) for the conference tournament. That provided an opportunity for freshman Russell Brockett (Austin, TX) and senior captain Ben Hough (Spokane, WA) to fill the #5 and #6 singles positions, and for Brockett to partner Mike Starr (So. - San Ramon, CA) at #3 doubles. Brockett and Hough ably answered the call by winning nine matches between them and staying perfect for the tournament.
Also perfect on the weekend was #1 singles and doubles player Lawrence Wang (Jr. - Orange, CA), who earned his second consecutive SCIAC Player of the Year award in addition to being named 1st Team All-SCIAC for the third straight year. No other Stag tennis player has ever won back-to-back Player of the Year accolades, and it has only been achieved once in the league's history. Along with Wang, sophomore Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA) and junior Guillaume Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) were also named 1st Team All-SCIAC. Starr was named to the conference second team.
By winning two important matches in the tournament at #1 doubles, Schils and Wang become the all-time Stags Tennis leaders in career wins by a doubles team, with 67, passing former teammates William Ellison (now CMS' Assistant Coach) and Evan Feldhausen. Schils and Wang also hold the record for most wins by a doubles team in a single season, with 29, achieved during their freshman campaign.
The Stags conclude the regular season with a 23-7 overall record, and 10-0 in conference, ranked 5th nationally. CMS will travel to the Ojai Valley tournament later this week, before finding out whether they will host the first three rounds of the NCAA team tournament May 2 - 4.
