Stags Shut Out Cal Lutheran and Baruch

CMS Stags Tennis played a rare Friday double-header and got convincing 9-0 wins over SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran and non-conference foe Bernard Baruch College.

In the afternoon SCIAC contest, CMS started strong in the doubles, getting service breaks in the first three games of each match. Mikey Lim (So - Honolulu, HI) and Mike Starr (So - San Ramon, CA) were paired for the first time since the fall of 2006, and got the Stags up 1-0 with an 8-0 win at #3 doubles. Ben Hough (Sr - Spokane, WA) and Eric MacColl (So - Greenbrae, CA) picked up their third consecutive win on the season at #2 doubles and were closely followed by (pictured right) Gui Schils (Jr - Shaker Heights, OH) and Lawrence Wang (Jr - Orange, CA) at the number one position. In the singles, the Stags failed to drop more than four games in any set of their six straight set victories. Junior Drew Sabater (Claremont, CA) remained perfect on the season at #5 singles in earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

In the 6:00 PM evening match against Bernard Baruch College of New York, CMS similarly got off to a strong start in the doubles. Schils / Wang and Hough / MacColl won for the second time at #1 and #2 respectively. Sabater partnered Kirthi Narasimhan (Sr - Sugar Land, TX) at #3 doubles. Collectively, the Stags pairs lost two games in three matches. In the singles, six new Stags took the court and won five of six matches in straight sets. Starr, playing #1 singles, was extended to a match tie-break, which he won 10-0, to close out the 9-0 victory over the Bearcats. Baruch, the 2007 CUNY league champs and first round NCAA tournament winners, are in California for a two match, three day road trip to begin their season.

The Stags move to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in conference. Next up for CMS is another double header on Saturday against SCIAC opponent Caltech at 9:30 AM, and Westmont College at 1:30 PM.
