Stags Defeat Biola and Fall to APU
CMS Stags Tennis got a split in their second consecutive Saturday double header with NAIA teams. The Stags defeated Biola 9-0 in the morning match and then lost a tough 7-2 match to second ranked Azusa Pacific University in the afternoon.
Against Biola, the Stags welcomed sophomore Michael Starr (San Ramon, CA) back to the starting lineup for the first time in more than a year. Starr paired with sophomore Gui Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) for a win at #1 doubles, and then earned a 6-1, 7-6 (5) victory at number two singles. Starr was one of five Stags to win twice in the morning.
Against the #2 nationally ranked NAIA team in the afternoon, CMS was competitive in both the doubles and singles. After Schils and Lawrence Wang (SO - Orange, CA) lost their second match in as many days at #1 doubles, the Stags rebounded with an impressive win at #2, behind the solid returning and volleying of Ben Hough (SR - Spokane, WA) and Eric MacColl (SO - Greenbrae, CA [pictured right]). With the dual match score tied at a match apiece, all attention turned to #3 doubles, where sophomore Mikey Lim (Honolulu, HI) and junior Ben Wiener (Houston, TX) traded service holds until eight games all. In the decisive tie-break, the Stags couldn't hold an early 2-1 lead and fell 7-3, to give APU a 2-1 lead after doubles. In the singles, the Stags' Lim and MacColl had leads at #1 and #3 singles respectively, but couldn't convert. The lone singles win for CMS came from junior Drew Sabater (Claremont, CA) at the #5 position. Sabater was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over APU's Ronald Chow.
The Stags are 2-3 overall and get back to conference play on Friday when they host Cal Lutheran at 2:00 PM. That begins a busy weekend of four matches, with the other three against Baruch College at 6:00 PM Friday, Caltech 9:30 AM Saturday, and Westmont College at 1:30 PM Saturday.
