CMS Earns Top Seed in SCIACs with Win Over CLU

The CMS Men's Tennis Team completed the SCIAC regular season on Saturday with a 6-1 win over Cal Lutheran at the Marks and Smith Courts. The Stags got out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles and losing only one game at the #2 and #3 positions. In the singles, Freshman Lawrence Wang (Orange, CA) was the first Stag to earn a victory at #2, closely followed by Junior Eric Chow (Sunnyvale, CA) and Freshman Guillaume Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) at #4 and #5 respectively. Junior William Ellison (Shaker Heights, OH) earned an important three-set victory over the West Region's third ranked player, Karlo Arapovic, to keep Ellison in a strong position to qualify for the NCAA individual tournament. After defeating CLU in the morning, the Stags travelled to Cal Poly Pomona to face the Division II Broncos. Using nine-point dual match scoring, the Stags again swept the doubles to take a 3-0 lead heading into the singles. CMS was led by Seniors Kyle Ellison and Jason Evans, both of whom earned two victories on the afternoon. As top seeds in the SCIAC tournament which begins Friday morning at Caltech, the Stags will face Whittier (#8) in the first round. If CMS can advance, they will meet the winner of Cal Lutheran (#4) and Pomona-Pitzer (#5) in the semi-finals. The final matches will be played Saturday morning, and will be followed by the All-SCIAC individual and team awards.
