Frank Applebaum Captures Second-Team Academic All-America Honors

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Frank Applebaum of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team earned second-team College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors, the organization announced today.

The Academic All-America program recognizes student-athletes who combine athletic success with high academic achievement. Applebaum earns Academic All-America distinction for the second time in his career, after earning a spot on the third team a year ago.

Applebaum finished second in the 200 fly and third in the 100 fly at the 2024 NCAA Division III championships, while also earning second-team All-America honors in the 200 IM (tenth) and first-team All-America honors with the 400-yard medley relay team.

Prior to this season, Applebaum was the two-time defending national champion in the 200 fly, setting an NCAA record with a 1:44.01 in 2022, and edging it last year to repeat as national champion with a 1:43.96. He then set the record a third time with a 1:43.87 in a dual meet against Pomona-Pitzer in December, and went .48 faster at the NCAA Championships in his bid to win a third title, but finished a close second.

Applebaum was named the SCIAC Swimmer of the Year after sweeping the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM at the league championships while helping CMS to its third straight conference title.

A dual major in philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) and philospophy, Applebaum as been on the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association Scholar All-America team in each of his first two seasons.

Applebaum becomes the third CMS student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors this academic year, joining Josh Angle (men's basketball) and Georgia McGovern (volleyball).
