Stags End SCIAC Championships with a Second-Place Finish

COMMERCE, Calif. – The Stags wrapped up the 2018 SCIAC Championships on Saturday, finishing in second-place with 998 points. Kendall Hollimon (CMC) led the Stags on the weekend by sweeping the one and three meter diving competitions in convincing fashion. As a team, the Stags earned 14 All-SCIAC awards with Hollimon's two First Team honors, seven Second Team awards, and five Third Team accolades.

The Stags finished less than 100 points behind their long-time rivals, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens who finished the week with 1,086.5 points. The second-place finish for CMS snaps their streak of ten-straight SCIAC Championships on the men's side.

Hollimon's scores in the one and three meter competitions were both top five marks in the nation this season. In addition to his top dives, the Stags earned nine NCAA 'B' cuts across four different events and they will await the times from the rest of the country to see if anyone is heading to the National Championships next month.


Day Four Update (Saturday, Feb. 24) - Stags finish Second with 998 points

Sam Willett (CMC) and Aaron Lutzker (HMC) earned Second Team All-SCIAC honors on Saturday for individual events to lead the Stags effort on the final day of competition. Willett took second-place in the 200 Back with a time of 1:50.94 while Lutzker earned his All-Conference accolade in the 200 Breast. Lutzker got to the wall in a time of 2:02.81.

Lutzker was one of three Stags to earn an NCAA 'B' cut in the 200 Breast. Henry Limm (HMC) finished right behind Lutzker in a time of 2:03.53 to take third-place, Third Teama honors, and an NCAA 'B' cut. Grant Murray (HMC) was the third Stags with a 'B' cut in the event with a time of 2:04.76.

A pair of Stags also earned 'B' cuts in the 1650 Free. Ben Culberson (CMC) and Abel Sapirstein (HMC) finished consecutively in fifth and sixth with times of 16:00.15 and 16:03.65, respectively to earn NCAA 'B' cuts.

John Everett (CMC) took third place in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:50.64 to round out the individual efforts from the Stags in the Championship.

The relay team of Marco Conati (HMC), Andreas Roeseler (HMC), Daniel Hayon (CMC), and Patricio Madero (CMC) capped off the Championships with a second-place swim for the Stags in the 400 Free Relay. They finished the race in 3:03.45 earning the Stags their only 'B' cut in a relay on the weekend.

Day Three Update (Friday, Feb. 23) Stags in Second with 683 points

The SCIAC Championships continued on Friday with a full slate of events. CMS started out the day with Kendall Hollimon (CMC) completing the Championship sweep of the diving events. Hollimon won the one meter diving competition with a score of 554.80, more than 55 points ahead of second-place. His mark is the fifth highest in the country this season and Hollimon is one of only 10 divers to score north of 500 points in the one meter competition this year.

In addition to Hollimon's effort, the Stags achieved three NCAA 'B' cuts in the 400 IM. Henry Limm (HMC) highlighted the effort by finishing second in the event and breaking the CMS program record by more than a second with a time of 3:55.61. Aaron Lutzker (HMC) finished behind Limm with a time of 3:59.17 to earn Third Team honors in the event and achieve a 'B' cut as well. John Everett (CMC) also earned a 'B' cut with a time of 4:01.14. He finished the event in fifth place.

Following the third day of the Championships, the Stags sit in second place with 683 points, behind Pomona-Pitzer who leads the nine team field with 809.5 points. After the Sagehens and Stags, the next closest team is Cal Lutheran with 389 points.

In addition to the stellar performance from Hollimon on the boards and the 'B' cuts in the 400 IM, the Stags earned another All-SCIAC accolade in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of Dave Marhervaks, Henry Limm (HMC), Marco Conati (HMC), and Daniel Hayon (CMC) turned in the eighth fastest time in CMS history with a 3:22.38 swim in the finals to take second.

Marco Conati (HMC) finished fourth in the 100 Fly, but his time of 49.48 is the sixth fastest time in Stags' history in the event. Grant Murray (HMC) also turned in a top-10 time in program history with a 57.13 time in the final of the 100 Breast. His time makes him the fifth fastest Stag in the event all-time.

The SCIAC Championships wrap up on Saturday. Prelims start at 9:00 a.m. with the finals of the 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, and 400 Free Relay beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Day Two Update (Thursday, Feb. 22) Stags in Second with 349 points

After two days at the SCIAC Championships, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags sit in second-place with 349 points. CMS trails the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (397.5 points) by less than 50 points. As expected, it's a two-team race midway through the Championships. Third-place Cal Lutheran sits more than 100 points behind the Stags with 239 points.

Freshman Daniel Hayon (CMC) was the story on Day Two of the SCIAC Championships for the Stags. Hayon earned a pair of All-SCIAC honors on Thursday with a Third Team honor in the 50 Free and a Second Team accolade in the 200 Free Relay.

Hayon got into the 50 Free final with the eighth fastest prelim time (21.06), but improved by two tenths of a second (20.86) to jump five spots and earn All-SCIAC honors with a third-place finish. He turned in a top-10 all-time CMS mark in the 50 Free with a time of 20.86. His time placed him ninth on the all-time CMS list.

In the 200 Free Relay, Hayon teamed up with Andreas Roeseler (HMC), Marco Conati (HMC), and Patricio Madero (CMC) to earn a second-place finish in a time of 1:23.00. The Stags finished behind Pomona-Pitzer by less than two seconds, but their relay time earned them a spot in the CMS record books as the fifth fastest in CMS program history in the event.

The SCIAC Championships continue tomorrow with prelims in the morning before the Finals begin at 5:00 p.m. On the docket for tomorrow evening is the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, and 400 Medley Relay.

Day One Update (Wednesday, Feb. 21) - Stags in Second with 146 points

On Wednesday the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team began the 2018 SCIAC Championships. The four-day Championships will conclude on Saturday, but after Day One of competition, the Stags sit in second-place with 146 points. CMS is just two points behind the Redlands Bulldogs and are four points ahead of Pomona-Pitzer.

Kendall Hollimon (CMC) got the Stags off to a banner start on Wednesday, winning the three meter diving competition with a score of 624.50. His score is the second-highest in the country this season and Hollimon is one of three divers to score north of 600 points in an event this year.

In addition to Hollimon's strong performance, the Stags turned in a pair of All-SCIAC relays with a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay (1:32.32) and a third-place performance in the 800 Free Relay (6:48.15).

The team of Dave Makhervaks (HMC), Tyler Welty (CMC), Jackson Crewe (HMC), and Patricio Madero (CMC) took second-place in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:32.32. The Stags finished less than three seconds behind first-place Pomona-Pitzer (1:29.49).

After a quick break, CMS finished the first day of the Championships by finishing in third-place in the 800 Free Relay. Andreas Roeseler (HMC), Ben Culberson (CMC), Grant Murray (HMC), and Jackson Crewe turned in a time of 6:48.15.

The SCIAC Championships continue tomorrow beginning at 9:00 a.m. with finals starting at 5:00 p.m.
