Second-Half Rally Carries Redlands Past CMS Men's Soccer

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team led 1-0 through 70 minutes, but unbeaten Redlands responded with two goals less than six minutes apart to come back for a 2-1 win on Wednesday evening at Farquahar Field.

Redlands improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC with the win, while CMS sees its record slip to 2-2-2 overall and 0-2-1 in league play.

Rafael Otero gave CMS the lead in the 19th minute when he converted a penalty kick following a Redlands hand ball. The Stags started out the game on fire, with Nico Del Villar, Luca Wahlberg and Gray Mollenkamp all forcing saves from Redlands goalkeeper Seth Lawrence before Otero found the net.

Redlands turned up the pressure in the second half, and CMS goalie Kevin Box came up with several big saves, including three in a span of less than two minutes midway through the second half, to keep it a 1-0 game.

However the Bulldogs broke through with 19:09 left to knot the score on a goal from Jarette Barajas. Just 5:52 later, Redlands took its first lead on a goal from Jacob Sattler with 13:17 showing on the clock.

The Stags tried to push forward late, earning a corner kick in the final minute, but Shaan Malik had his shot blocked with 46 seconds left as Redlands was able to hang on.

Redlands finished with a 20-12 edge in shots and a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday night when it hosts Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
