Late goal puts Leos past Stags

LA VERNE, Calif. – La Verne scored a goal in the 85th minute, giving the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team a 2-1 loss on the road on Saturday night. Senior Mehron Abdi (CMC) put in CMS' goal for the Stags to tie up the game on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left; but it was not enough to come away with the win.

The statistics indicated what an evenly played game it was. CMS edged out ULV on shots 9-to-7 but gave the Leos more opportunities for free kicks off fouls and cards. Very few of the shots were on target with each goalie in the game recording one save: CMS' Daniel Cui (CMC) in the first half and each of La Verne's keepers in separate halves.

Both of La Verne's goals came from set pieces. In the 63rd minute, ULV's Javier Jasso placed a free kick right into the fray in front of the Stags' goal and it went off a CMS player into the net for the Leos' first score.

The Stags evened the score 17 minutes later by drawing a foul in the box and getting awarded a penalty kick. Abdi knocked it in for his seventh goal on the year.

CMS' intensity grew but the offensive attacks were stymied by the deep La Verne defense. Senior Michael Crowley (CMC) led the Stags in shots with just three on the night as he and Abdi worked with sophomore Yusuke Kobayashi (CMC) to create opportunities.

On one Leopard counterattack, Auden Fox served in a ball from the right side to Christopher Wong's head, who placed it perfectly for Saul Uribe to tap it in for the game-winner.

With the loss, CMS is now 7-6-1 (22 points) in conference play. The Stags are tied with Cal Lutheran for fifth place and one point behind Pomona-Pitzer, who sits in fourth place. CMS faces the Kingsmen in Thousand Oaks, Calif. tonight at 7 p.m. and then hosts Whittier on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. for the final game of the regular season.
