Second half push not enough as Stags fall to Sagehens 3-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A three-score deficit with 30 minutes remaining proved to be too much to overcome for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team, as it lost its final road match of the season, 3-1 to Pomona-Pitzer on Oct. 28. The loss dropped CMS to 6-7-4 overall, 6-6-3 in SCIAC with its final match of the season on Oct. 31 at home against Occidental.

Junior midfielder Mehron Abdi (CMC) put CMS on the board in the 81st minute with a goal just inside the left post which brought CMS within two scores at 3-1. Abdi has three goals on the season and two in as many matches including the winning goal in the final second against Cal Lu on Oct. 24.

A few minutes after Abdi's goal, junior midfielder Michael Crowley (CMC) nearly scored for the Stags on a direct kick at the 84:54 mark, but his attempt went wide. CMS would not get another shot attempt off against Pomona-Pitzer during the final five minutes of the match.

To start, the match remained scoreless until the 29th minute when Max DeWit gave Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead off of an assist from Voja Maric. Pomona-Pitzer cushioned its lead in the 34th minute when Aidan Ferrer found the back of the net.

The Stags managed just two shots against the Sagehens in the first half.

Pomona-Pitzer pushed its lead out to 3-0 in the 60th minute with Peter Rentzepis' goal.

In the second half, CMS put two shots on goal, one by senior forward Taylor Lemmon (CMC) in the 63rd minute and the other by Crowley.

CMS sophomore goalie Daniel Cui (CMC) came away with six saves on the afternoon.
