Penalty kick goal drops CMS in season-opening loss at No. 6 Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In Matt Edwards' first game as head coach, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team nearly pulled off an upset of sixth-ranked Trinity (Texas), losing 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 79th minute of the season-opener on Sept. 4.

Despite being outshot in the match (18-12), particularly early on, CMS (0-1) pushed Trinity to the very end. Of CMS' 12 shots, five were on goal.

Tom Carwile scored what ended up being the game-winner for Trinity (2-0). After Trinity's goal, CMS had several opportunities, firing off eight shots in the final 10 minutes, three of which were shots on goal. With just under a minute to play, junior defender Elijah Lichtenberg (CMC) and senior midfielder Hogan Marhoefer (CMC) each attempted a shot, with Lichtenberg's shot being saved by Trinity goalie Chad Margotta and Marhoefer's shot sailing wide.

Senior forward Taylor Lemmon (CMC), junior midfielder Ryan Karle (CMC), junior midfielder Alex Censullo (CMC), junior midfielder Mehron Abdi (CMC) and Marhoefer each attempted two shots for the Stags.

Sophomore goalie Daniel Cui (CMC) made his first career start for CMS and came up with six saves.

CMS is back in action for the second game of its Texas trip on Saturday, Sept. 5 vs. Hardin-Simmons at 4 p.m. PST.
