Stags blank Sagehens in Sixth Street Rivalry rematch

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team did not take long to state their intention of battling the top seeded Pomona-Pitzer team. In the 2-0 game, the Stags took an early lead and only gained strength from it. CMS improved to 6-5-1 in SCIAC, just behind Redlands at 7-5 in the SCIAC standings.

In the fifth minute, the ball was served into a scrum in front of the frame. After a few deflections, junior Taylor Lemmon found sophomore Mehron Abdi who knocked it in. The goal put the Stags up 1-0.

Late in the first half, the Sagehens had the would-be equalizer called back due to a player being offside. Another opportunity for Pomona-Pitzer was recalled because of yet another offside call.

Senior Jake Bishop tacked on an insurance goal in the 77th minute with a smash into the upper right corner from about 30 yards out.

Bishop also led the team in shots with five on the night. Freshman goal keeper Grant Gilchrist totaled four saves in an impressive outing.

The Stags next play at Redlands on Monday, October 20 at 7 p.m.
