Scoring frenzy leads Stags to victory over Cal Lu

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's soccer team beat Cal Lutheran 6-0 in the Monday nightcap. The Stag's offense and defense contributed to tonight's blowout win over the Kingsmen to climb to first place in SCIAC.

It all began when senior forward Ethan Hallberg converted a corner kick by freshman Elijah Lichtenberg into a beautiful header goal just 20 minutes into the game.

Junior Joseph Romano scored the second goal, assisted by freshman Michael Crowley near the end of the first half. At half time the Stags were already in the lead 2-0 over the conference rival Kingsmen.

The flood gates opened up in the second half when it seemed the Stags could not be stopped. Freshman Mehron Abdi scored from a pass by freshman Alex Censullo in the 52nd minute and then sophomore Hogan Marhoefer slipped one past the keeper in the 65th minute.  Crowley notched his second assist of the night and sixth of the season.

Just three minutes later, Hallberg scored again for CMS putting the stags up 5-0. Freshman William Cresap had the assist this time.

With ten minutes left in the game freshman Dylan Saffer worked his way past the Kingsmen defense with some fancy footwork and scored, assisted by sophomore Salar Hajimirsadeghi.

The Stags improved their overall record to 9-4-1 (8-2-1 in SCIAC) and take first place in the conference standings after tonight's win.

CMS hosts Pomona-Pitzer this coming Saturday at 1pm in the 6th Street Rivalry match-up.
