Ma Earns SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of Year, Five Named to All-SCIAC First Team

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Yuefeng (Michael) Ma swept the SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors, head coach Mitchell Fedorka and staff earned the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year, and five members of the CMS men's golf team earned first-team all-league honors, the conference office announced this morning.

Mason Chiu, who won the SCIAC Athlete of the Year honor in 2019 and was also on the All-SCIAC first team this year, was the co-winner of the Jesse Clark Sportsmanship Award. Adrian Chiu, Mason's younger brother, was also an All-SCIAC first team selection, as was Will Parker and Vijay Jain

Ma earned the Athlete of the Year award after earning individual medalist honors at the three-day conference championship tournament, carding rounds of 71-70-73 to finish two-under for the event, the only player to come in at par or better. Ma competed in five of the seven SCIAC rounds and finished with an average score of 72. At SCIAC No. 2, Ma earned ninth place honors as he shot a 77 on day one before saving eight strokes off his score to collect a three-under-par 69 on day two.

Mason Chiu was the SCIAC individual medalist in 2019, including a 63 (-7) in his opening round. This year, he earned another top-five finish by coming in fourth place overall, including an even-par 72 in his final round. He was the individual medalist at the first SCIAC regular season championship in February with a -2, the only player in the red, earning him SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors, and added a -12 at California State Intercollegiate in the fall for individual medalist honors in that event as well.

Adrian Chiu also captured a top-10 finish at the SCIAC Championships by coming in seventh place, shooting a low of 74 in his opening round. Jain surged up into the top 10 with a 74 in his final round, coming in ninth place overall to give the Stags four players in the top 10. In the fall, he shot a 69 in his first collegiate round at the Redlands Bulldog Invitational.

Parker shot a 68 in his second round at SCIAC No. 1 to help CMS to a first-place finish, and was the top finisher for the Stags at SCIAC No. 2, carding a 142 (-2) to help CMS to another first-place finish. He also finished third in the fall at the Redlands Bulldog Invitational with a -3, and shot -4 at the California State Intercollegiate.

CMS will be back in action for the NCAA Division III Championships next week at Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, which be held from May 10-13.
