Edward Wu Wins SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After winning individual medalist honors in his SCIAC debut, first-year Edward Wu earned the SCIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week honor for events through Sunday, March 1, the league office announced today.

Wu had a spectacular opening round on Saturday at the Tukwet Canyon Golf Club Champions Course on the first of two days at SCIAC #1, shooting a 66, which was four shots better than anyone else in the field. He opened up his round with seven birdies in his first 13 holes to peak at -7, before settling for a -6 over his first 18 holes of SCIAC competition.

Sunday's conditions were much tougher, with wind, rain and cold affecting everyone's scores, but Wu was able to grind his way through to finish with a 145 and win the tournament by a single stroke. He led by one shot coming up the 18th hole, and put his chip within inches of the hole, leaving him a tap-in for his first collegiate championship.

As a team, the Stags finished the tournament with a 14-shot advantage over Redlands, a margin which they will take into SCIAC #2 on April 4-5 in Tustin Ranch. Before then, Wu and the Stags will be back on the course in Jekyll Island, Georgia at the Collegiate Invitational, which will be held on March 20-22.
