SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team won The Master's University Spring Invitational at Sand Canyon Country Club on Tuesday, thanks to a five-under, 283 in the final round of the three-round tournament. Day Two Update (Tuesday, Feb. 27) - CMS Wins with a team score of 885 (+21)
The Stags erased a two-stroke deficit on Tuesday with their lowest round of the tournament thanks to a five-under score of 283. Alex Wrenn (CMC) and Jonathan Shaw (CMC) each carded rounds of 68 (-4) to lead the Stags on the day. Wrenn's four-under round comes after back-to-back 77s while Shaw's 68 came after rounds of 76 and 79 on Monday.

Wrenn and Shaw both finished in the top 15 on the individual side, finishing just a stroke apart. Wrenn finished in a three-way tie for 12th place with a three-round score of 222 (+6). Shaw was just a stroke behind, with a score of 223 (+7) in a tie for 15th place.

Ken Kong (CMC) finished the tournament a stroke better than Wrenn with rounds of 77 (+5), 70 (-2), and 74 (+2) to finish alone in 11th pace with a score of 221 (+5).

Mason Chiu (CMC) and Josh Hunter (HMC) finished just a stroke apart with tournament scores of 240 and 241, respectively. Chiu finished in a tie for 44th while Hunt was tied for 46th in the 66-player field.

The Stags have finished on top of the leaderboard in both of their tournaments this spring. The Stags finished ahead of The Master's University by 12 strokes. SCIAC foes, Redlands (898, +34) and Cal Lutheran (903, +39) finished in third and fourth in the tournament. Both teams turned in strong final rounds, with the Bulldogs shooting an even-par 288, while the Kingsmen went two-under with a 286.

Day One Update (Monday, Feb. 26) - CMS in Third after Round One (302, +14)
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team teed it up in The Master's University Spring Invitational at Sand Canyon Country Club on Monday for the first two rounds of the three-round tournament. A 45-minute frost delay in the morning pushed the start time of the opening round back and, as a result, not all 10 teams could complete both of their scheduled rounds. The Stags however, were one of four teams to finish both rounds on Monday. CMS carded rounds of 302 (+14) and 300 (+12) in extremely windy conditions. Their first round total of 302 puts them in third-place, eight strokes behind The Master's University.

Their two rounds in the 300s were their first such rounds of the season for the Stags. The Stags were not the only team battling the 20-25 mile per hour winds throughout the round. Only two players in the 64-player field turned in rounds under par in the First Round. Austin Long (CMC) was part of a group of six players that carded even-par 72s in their opening round. Long followed up his 72 with a two-over, 74 in the Second Round and sits six shots off the lead at two-over, 146.

Ken Kong (CMC) sits just one shot behind Long and seven shots off the pace at 147 (+3). Kong got into the top-15 a little differently than Long. The freshman shot a seven-over, 77 in the First Round before dropping seven strokes in Round Two for a two-under, 70.

Back-to-back 77s from Alex Wrenn (CMC), puts the junior in a tie for 37th place at 154 (+10). Jonathan Shaw (CMC) is one behind Wrenn, following rounds of 76 (+4) and 79 (+7) on Monday.

After two rounds of play, Josh Hunter (HMC) and Mason Chiu (CMC) sit in T-53rd and 56th place with scores of 166 (+22) and 167 (+23), respectively.

All of the placements are subject to change after the rest of the field completes their Second Round tomorrow morning. The six teams that have yet to finish their Second Round are scheduled to take the course at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning with the start of the Final Round beginning immediately following their completion.

CMS looks poised to jump up the leaderboard after they dropped two strokes from Round One to Round Two. The Master's University, who led after one round, went the opposite direction and added 12 strokes to their score in the Second Round. They now now lead CMS by just two strokes at 602-600 heading into the Final Round.
