Shaw highlights All-SCIAC Teams for Stags

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Five members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's golf team were named to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference's First and Second Team as announced on May 5. Head Coach Bim Jollymour was also named the conference's Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

Jollymour led the Stags to the program's 12th SCIAC title with an impressive come-from-behind victory on the final day of the Championships. He is assisted by John Hill and Mitch Fedorka.

Junior Jonathan Shaw (CMC) earned his third All-SCIAC nod in three years and was the lone representative for the Stags on the First Team in 2017. Shaw was tied for second going into final day and then sunk a birdie putt on 18 on the final day for a tie of the individual title at the SCIAC Championships. He was unable to play the first few tournaments of the season due to rehabilitating a previous injury but when he was back on the course, he returned to form almost instantly. Shaw shot the low round on the second day of SCIAC #2 with a 70 to finish in eighth.

Sophomore Alex Wrenn (CMC) was awarded his second All-Conference nod with his Second Team honor in 2017. He was the Ken Sherman Newcomer of the Year in 2016. At the SCIAC Championships, he brought home a 70 for the Stags on the final day and personally finished in a tie for ninth after rounds of 78, 74, and 70. His consistency was also seen earlier in the moth at SCIAC #2 at which he placed 10th.

Freshman Harrison Brenner (CMC) followed in Wrenn's footsteps and was named the Ken Sherman Newcomer of the Year in addition to a Second Team honor this season. He finished in a tie for 13th at the SCIAC Championships, after recording the other 70 on the final day. He also put together a strong day two performance at SCIAC #1 to shoot even par, tie for fifth individually and help the Stags to the tournament win.

Junior Matt Shuman (CMC) steadied the Stags all season and had two top-10 finishes in SCIAC play to earn Second Team honors. He tallied the third 70 on the final day of the SCIAC Championships to boost the Stags over La Verne for the conference title. His consistency at 76, 75, and 70 in the Championships set the tone for the Stags. At SCIAC #1, he placed third after being 1-under on the second day. This marks his third All-SCIAC honor in as many years.

Junior Johnny Brandt (CMC) earns his first All-SCIAC nod after placing in the top-15 in all three SCIAC tournaments this season. Brandt finished in a tie for ninth at the Championships with a 1-under 71 on the second day to keep CMS within striking distance of the Leopards. At SCIAC #1, he improved 17 places on the second day for a tie of fifth place overall. SCIAC #2 was no different as the seasoned Stag recovered from an 81 on day one to shoot a 72 on the second day for a tie of 15th individually.

CMS travels to Howey-in-the-Hills for the 2017 NCAA Championships in hopes to defend their 2016 national title. Play begins on Tuesday, May 16 and will extend through Friday, May 19.
